Crowd funding enables businesses to raise money by selling shares to the public, usually via an online platform. Investors can put in very small sums and normally benefit from tax incentives such as the Enterprise Investment Scheme and Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme. In some cases businesses selling shares can control the size and pricing of the offer.

Short Description: HOW WILL CROWDFUNDING WORK IN PRACTICE THROUGH SQUAREKNOT? A business that requires funding should prepare a comprehensive business plan that will detail its background, its key objectives, its plan for achieving those objectives, and the level and type of funding that is being sought. The aim of the business plan is to attract investors and raise the required amount of funding for the business. It will therefore need to be informative, understandable and present a credible investment opportunity. For equity funding, the pitch will state the percentage of the company’s total equity that is being offered in return for the target amount of investment. The business plan should demonstrate projected yields through dividend payments to investors, based on realistically achievable profit targets. A detailed exit plan for equity investors will also make the business a more attractive investment opportunity, as the lack of marketability of shares in private limited companies can often significantly devalue any investment. For debt funding, the pitch will state the business owner’s target interest rate. The key element of the business plan will be cash flow projections that show the capacity of the business to make interest and debt principal repayments to investors within the agreed timescales. A sensitivity analysis that highlights various ‘what if’ scenarios, and their impact on the ability of the business to service its debts, will also help investors analyse the level of risk involved in making the investment. Normally, the lower the perceived risk is to investors then the lower the interest rate terms that will be offered. Once completed to the required standard, the business plan will be presented on the Squareknot website, and will then be available for our database of potential investors to review and pledge a level of investment. Investments cumulate until the pitch funding target is reached.

Short Description: Trillion Fund was founded in 2011 by Dr. Michael Stein and Phillip Riches to open up opportunities to profit from clean energy to everyone, through crowdfunding. They had a big ambition: to help drive forward the $1 trillion of annual global investment required to reach the scale of clean energy generation needed to prevent further global warming - and to give people good returns on their investment into the bargain. The website began operating in Spring 2012 and became an appointed representative of Abundance Generation in January 2013, bringing the site under Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) regulation. Trillion launched an affiliate marketing platform for renewable energy projects seeking to raise money from the crowd in June 2013. It won interim permissions to operate as a peer-to-peer lending platform in March 2014 and began offering loans directly in June 2014, giving potential investors a range of options, from peer-to-peer loans, to traditional funds, to community share raises. It completed a merger with Buzzbnk, the crowdfunding platform for social businesses and projects, in November 2014. Trillion is privately-owned. Vivienne Westwood, the fashion designer and environmentalist, became a majority stakeholder in March 2013, while Albion , the creative design and marketing agency, took a stake in April 2014. The site has nearly 7,000 members.
